The candidate will be responsible for the accomplishment of the office, department and corporate goals. Sets goals that are in accordance with Corporate and Legal Department goals. Directs staff in the accomplishment of the goals. Conducts performance appraisals, reviews staff attorney's work for quality and quantity and takes appropriate action to correct deficiencies. Recruits, hires and trains new staff. Reviews incoming cases and assigns to outside counsel or attorneys in staff office as appropriate. Audits selected case files to insure proper case handling and adherence to company policy and applicable legislation. Act as principal legal advisor for all departments at the office. Meets with claims and/or policyholders to discuss general policy and litigation prevention matters. Serves as Chief Trial Attorney on selected cases. Stay abreast of developments in the law generally. Confer with and write to insureds during the pendency of the litigation. Understands and creatively uses technology; applies technology to the process of law to improve quality and reduce cost. Keep superiors within the Legal Department advised as to work needs and any problems with the office and its personnel.
