Associate Director of the Law Library
Duties: Will oversee daily operations of the law library and assist the Director and Associate Dean for Library Services with overall planning and will maintain the integrated library system. Will make independent decisions about policy and strategy and work methodology and procedures. Will consult with the Associate Dean for Library Services when dealing with HR issues and policies affecting overall library operations. Will supervise and train staff (approximately 4-5 professional librarians and 12 support staff). Coordinate, develop and implement library policy with the Associate Dean for Library Services and Director of the Law Library and members of the staff. Responsible for the day-to-day functioning of the Law Library. Foster a workplace of open, timely communication. Assist in budget preparation and planning of library services and programs. Work with the staff to compile statistics. Analyze statistics and findings. Prepare reports. Keep informed of administrative policies and procedures. Oversee personnel management; resolve personnel issues. Collaborate with the supervising librarians, coordinate and implement the policies and procedures for public services (reference, circulation, interlibrary loan, computer services, government documents and bindery) and technical services (acquisitions, serials, cataloging, and end processing). Encourage and facilitate coordination between all parts of the Law Library. Oversee the updating and revision of manuals. Prepare and update job descriptions. Lead regular reviews of workflow; evaluate staffing needs. Develop and implement staff development programs. Work with the supervising librarians to create cross-training opportunities. Serve 1100+ students and 90 or more full-time and adjunct faculty. Oversee the use of the Innovative Interfaces system which has over 1200 users. Solve invoice payment problems by working with the University’s Accounts Payable staff. Work with the University’s Human Resources staff. Communicate with external vendors and librarians. Manage and oversee all technical services operations. Hire, direct, supervise, train and evaluate the technical services librarians. Plan and coordinate all aspects of the Law Library acquisitions, serials, bibliographic and physical processing functions and cataloging of the Library’s information resources, both paper and electronic. Resolve complicated invoice problems. Manage and oversee the processes of the public services unit to ensure services optimally meet changing patron needs. Hire, direct, supervise, train and evaluate the public services librarians. Assure there is adequate coverage for public services. Monitor functioning of equipment. Monitor physical arrangement, appearance and organization of library and library collection. Solve problems. Provide Anglo-American, international, foreign and comparative law reference service. Search online databases; offer instruction in the use of both print and online databases and services. Participate in instructional programs. Plan for and implement library automation. Maintain the continuing operation of the integrated library system (Innovative Interfaces). Oversee the training of the staff on the Innovative system. Monitor and evaluate the use of existing technology applications for technical and public services units. Evaluate the use of existing library systems technology. Assist library users with access to the network and applications, such as exam software and the course management system, used in the law school. Troubleshoot basic hardware and software problems as needed. Represent the library before local and national library organizations. Develop and maintain effective relationships with library users and local library community. Serve on University-wide committees. Keep current with new or changing technology, library issues and standards. Perform other duties as assigned.
