Staff Attorney

Duties: Providing support and advice on substantive civil legal issues facing special populations. Assisting with the recruitment, orientation, and training of volunteers; Conducting outreach in the veterans community statewide and, with paralegal assistance, to the migrant farmworker communities; Screening clients for eligibility and making referrals, as appropriate; conducting preliminary and subsequent interviews with clients; conducting factual investigations and analysis and advising clients of results of investigations; conducting legal research; and counseling clients about their options pursuant to standards established by Aid. Maintaining a caseload for persons within the special populations served. Cases may involve veterans’ benefits, wage protections for agricultural workers, substandard housing, overtime claims, unemployment insurance, and other legal issues affecting the populations served. Providing excellent representation to clients in various forums and preparing and/or responding to pleadings and motions, discovery requests, appellate briefs, and memoranda.
