Senior Attorney, Litigation
The candidate will oversee and handle pending and threatened litigation from initial case evaluation through resolution, including contentious, noncontentious, interpleader, collection, and affirmative recovery matters. Collaborate with and report to internal departments regarding potential and pending litigation, arbitration, investigations, and regulatory enforcement matters. Actively supervise outside counsel, including case strategy and legal spend, utilizing suitable budgeting and oversight practices. Assist in preparing company witnesses for depositions and other testimony. Conduct legal research and draft memos, position statements, briefs, motions and other litigation and arbitration filings. Draft responses to discovery requests and subpoenas, and review documents for responsive material. Draft Legal Holds and coordinate e-discovery collections. Provide day-to-day legal advice and presentations to internal departments, and proactively counsel stakeholders on litigation risk and mitigation. Build and foster relationships across all levels of the organization. Occasional business travel required. Performs other duties and/or projects as assigned. Strong project management skills. Excellent organizational and prioritization skills. Strong attention to detail, editing and proofreading skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment. Ability to make decisions while operating in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment. Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills with the ability to articulate important legal concerns/principles to business units. Excellent research, analysis, and drafting skills. Strong critical thinking and analytical reasoning skills, with ability to provide alternate approaches and solutions. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Access, Excel and Outlook, and matter management tools. Effective at establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with management, colleagues, and internal and external contacts. Strong negotiation skills. Ability to mentor junior staff. Juris Doctorate from ABA accredited law school required. Member in good standing of a state bar association required. Admission to at least one federal bar preferred. 5+ years of prior legal experience required. Mid-sized to large law firm experience, or comparative experience with a regulatory agency or court preferred. Litigation experience required; trial experience preferred. Experience in the life insurance and annuity industry preferred.
