Courtroom Attorney
The candidate will provide legal support to the Division of Children and Family Services and the Youth Rehabilitation and Treatment Centers as a juvenile court attorney. The attorney in this position will represent the Department of Health and Human Services as a Special Assistant Attorney General in juvenile court proceedings, serving as one of the agency’s primary YRTC litigators. Will appear in various child welfare and juvenile justice court proceedings across the state, and will be the primary YRTC courtroom attorney for both the Central and Western Service Areas. Also have the opportunity to work with YRTC administration to help inform policy decisions and program implementation and may, as needed, handle appeals filed with the Nebraska appellate courts. Should have 3 years of experience as an attorney practicing law and providing legal services such as preparing and trying cases, advising clients, and/or interpreting laws or administrative policies. should preferable have Graduated from an accredited school of law and admission to the Nebraska Bar; and experience appearing as an attorney in juvenile court proceedings; juvenile court experience in Nebraska is preferred. Must have ability to: provide legal support to the agency in juvenile court proceedings; interpret and apply statutes, case law, decisions of court/administrative hearings, federal and state regulations, and administrative rules and policies on a variety of legal issues; effectively communicate and interact with legal associates, other government employees, and the public; conduct legal research; formulate legal opinions and recommendations based on legal research; identify critical elements of legal questions or issues; and use a computer for word processing and research.
