Chief Deputy County Counsel
Duties: Receives assignments from the County Counsel and/or Assistant County Counsel and assigns and schedules legal work for Department staff. Renders legal opinions in writing and orally in response to requests from County officers and department heads. Provides oversight and direction on all County-wide contracts including drafting contracts, leases, deeds, ordinances, resolutions and other legal instruments for the Board of Supervisors, departments and special districts of the County. Serves as designated HIPAA Privacy Officer for Merced County. Serves as designated advisor for Children and Families First Commission. Manages and directly supervises various classifications of the County Counsel office. Counsels Department staff as warranted by problems and circumstances; participates in County-wide employment law and labor law issues and claims against the County as delegated. Prosecutes legal action on behalf of, an defends actions against, the County and its subdivisions before courts of origin, appellate courts, and various administrative bodies. Serves as County Counsel or Assistant County Counsel when delegated, including serving as legal counsel at Board of Supervisors meetings. Performs a broad range of administrative and management duties.
