HCA’s MountainStar Transfer Center offers a variety of patient transport services and the only transport specialty teams with the ability to provide high risk obstetrical, neonatal and critical care pediatric patient transport into the HCA, MountainStar Division hospital system. Serving patients throughout Greater Salt Lake City, HCA offers comprehensive health solutions—including advanced medical care, education, and community outreach—at its hospitals and other freestanding facilities. At the HCA Transfer Center, we assist in transporting patients by ground, helicopter and fixed wing. We also provide daily, 24-hour access to the transport teams for Inner Facility Transfers, Physician Office Direct Admissions and Emergency Transport for injured and critically ill patients. This unique service simplifies the process of getting a patient transferred to the right hospital, to the right specialists, at the right time by utilizing the latest telecommunications technology. The Transfer Center is staffed by registered nurses and EMT/paramedics who will assist in arranging the transport logistics.

JOB TITLE: Division Director Access Center

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Directs the development and implementation of the strategic, quality, growth and operational processes that support the effective transfer/transport of patients from HCA and non-HCA facilities into and out of HCA Mountain Division facilities. Establishes a market/division focused strategy for transfer/transport of patients that enables growth and competitive advantage. Under the direction of division and facility leadership, acts as the liaison with referring facilities/vendors to facilitate quality, process improvement and division initiatives. Acts as a partner to division and facility leadership demonstrating strong sense of ownership of all improvement efforts related to transfer/transport of patients. Provides leadership and direction in determining and accessing needed data and ensures ongoing reporting of identified metrics. Facilitates the resolution of issues and roadblocks to the progress of the initiative. Establishes and executes regular systems for communicating the progress and results to stakeholders. Serves as the division’s liaison to corporate departments and professionals focused on related efforts and integrates division efforts with corporate initiatives.


SUPERVISES: Access Center Nurses, Access Center Coordinators, Access Center Bed Placement Specialists and Division Data Analyst


* Provide leadership, management and administration of all aspects of the HCA Mountain Division Access Center in order to ensure of organizational mission and objectives are met.

* Develop relationships and processes that will enhance access to the Mountain Division hospitals, services, physicians, and health care professionals.

* Hire and maintain appropriate staffing levels and utilization of personnel and ensure the highest quality of professional skill.

* Provide a structured means for policy and procedure development through regularly scheduled staff meetings allowing for continual evaluation, review, and update of standards, functions, goals, and objectives.

* Work collaboratively with the HCA Mountain Division medical staff advisors and client designated medical staff advisors to establish, revise, and enforce the medical staff participation criteria for transfer operations.

* Promote HCA Mountain Division culture of excellence and quality service through teamwork, respectful communication, maintenance of a professional environment, partnership with those we serve, and anticipation of patient and customer needs.

* Develop capital/operational budget, strategic planning, customer relations, marketing, and outreach activities of the Access Center

* Consult with HCA Mountain Division legal advisors on the interpretation and enforcement of the Inspector’s General Safe Harbor Regulations, EMTALA, Stark Laws, and any other points of law that are pertinent to communication center activity.

* Analyzes all aspects of transfer/transport center operations for potential improvement opportunities. Designs and recommends processes, systems, procedures, and operational changes to increase efficiency and effectiveness. Identifies and communicates potential business opportunities.

* Ensure the sound fiscal operation of the department.

* Monitor operating budget and staffing levels.

* Demonstrate responsibility for the containment of costs through appropriate ordering of supplies, recovery of service charges, and conservation of supplies.

* Monitor department expenditures to ensure compliance with budget limits.

* Respond promptly to changes in workload, adjusting assignments as necessary to achieve optimal productivity and efficiency.

* Select, orient, and educate department staff.

* Develop standards of performance, conduct annual performance evaluation, and initiate or make recommendations for HR actions.

* Provide leadership development to all staff for effective problem identification and resolution, and for efficient day-to-day operations.

* Responsible for accurate time keeping in Kronos.

* Practice and adhere to the “Code of Conduct” philosophy and “Mission and Value Statement.”

* Other duties as assigned.


* Knowledge of the principles and practices of access/call/ transfer center communications and operations and/or healthcare management.

* Knowledge of state and national rules and regulations, including EMTALA.

* Interact with other healthcare provider and local government officials.

* Ensure organizational productivity.

* Exercise a high degree of judgment, initiative, discretion, and decision-making.

* Ability to work in an evolving healthcare environment.

* Strong communication and presentation skills.

* Knowledge of productivity, financial operations and reporting systems.

* Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, Internet searches, and relevant data bases.

* Ability to work independently and under pressure to follow through on issues.

* Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

* Ability to establish and maintain long-term customer relationships, building trust and respect by consistently meeting and exceeding expectations.

* Ability to work effectively with other employees and external parties.


* Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Public Administration or a related field required.

* Master’s degree preferred.


Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive supervisory experience.

Call Center experience preferred.

CERTIFICATE/LICENSE– RN Licensure in the State of Utah
