Summer Associate Program
The summer associates are assigned to particular practice areas, including Litigation, International Trade and Government Policy, and participate in projects similar to those assigned to full-time associates. The firm makes a real effort to ensure that summer associates have 'real world' assignments in their particular area of interest. Most summer associates also participate in one or two projects from a specialty area outside the assigned area. Summer associates are encouraged to attend depositions, hearings and trials with lawyers practicing in these jurisdictions. Summer associates attend conferences, 'Lunch-and-Learn' practice group sessions, depositions, trials, and other court proceedings, labor arbitrations, administrative proceedings, and business transaction closings. We closely monitor work assignments to ensure that summer associates work on multiple projects with a variety of lawyers in different practice areas. Summer associates work on projects assigned by various lawyers in the office through summer associate work assignment coordinators. After a project is assigned, summer associates communicate directly with the assigning lawyer. Summer associates are expected to work and act like lawyers in the office. There are ongoing lawyer training programs that all summer associates are encouraged to attend. The majority of a summer associate's time is spent working on projects for various lawyers and attending 'out-of-library' events such as depositions, closings, etc. There is also a schedule of social events designed to permit the summer associates to get to know as many lawyers in the office as possible and to acquaint out-of-towners with the city. Summer associates receive work two ways: directly from lawyers; and/or from work assignment coordinators. Summer associates are selected based on academic achievements, activities and areas of interest. The program commences in May and runs through the first week in August. Split summers are determined on a case-by-case basis.
