Litigation Paralegal
The candidate participates in all phases of litigation to include but not limited to eminent domain actions, inverse condemnation actions, assessor valuation appeals, code enforcement actions, and business license actions. Opens and closes files in proper database and maintains pleadings indexes. Participates in creating discovery plans to include but not limited to initial investigations, written discovery, and depositions. Prepares pleadings, notices, subpoenas, motions, dismissals, orders, discovery, other legal documents, correspondence, and reports as instructed and requested by designated office personnel or supervising attorneys for their review. Assists in pretrial, trial, and post trial phases of litigation, such as: Investigates and researches critical legal issues. Organizes and indexes discovery, coordinates depositions with opposing counsel, witnesses, and court reporters. Assists in preparing and organizing attorneys for trial, including compiling preparing attorneys’ trial notebooks and preparing exhibits. Attends court with attorney(s) and assists by taking notes, preparing exhibits, scheduling, coordinating, and/or accompanying witnesses and/or victims before and/or during the trial, assisting with jury selection, and/or managing deposition transcripts for use at trial. Conducts post trial jury interviews. Assists in appellate court cases.Collects and prepares transcripts from lower courts. Organizes and indexes all exhibits. Prepares appeals deadline calendar. Assists attorney in drafting and editing legal writings to include but not limited to memoranda of law, legal briefs, and responses. Files legal writings with appellate courts. Requests payment for invoices from vendors, filing fees, and settlement fees. Researches and analyzes legal issues commonly encountered by members of a Department/Office and provides assistance/instruction to staff as needed. Researches deeds, mortgages and wills to ensure proper naming of parties and notification to all parties involved. Conducts initial client interviews both in person and over the telephone. Manages and oversees the FOIA program by ensuring all requests are properly documented and fulfilled. Prepares for and attends courts hearings and both jury and non-jury trials in summary court, state court, administrative law court, and federal court. Assists investigators in obtaining correct information regarding cases. Responds to questions from the public, other attorneys, law enforcement officials, investigators, and courts. Keeps attorneys informed as to current status of cases. Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions. Requests payment for invoices from vendors, filing fees, and settlement fees. Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems. Keeps abreast of all current laws and changes to the law by attending Continuing Legal Education Seminars and self-study, and attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas. Responds to questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner. Communicates and coordinates regularly with others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities. Performs other directly related duties as assigned that are consistent with the role and function of the classification. Should have Bachelor’s degree. Should have Associate’s degree in paralegal studies, or related studies, issued from an accredited institution and a paralegal certification issued by a nationally recognized paralegal organization or program i.e. the National Association of Legal Assistants or Trident Technical School. Should have 7+ years of experience in litigation support. Paralegal certification is preferred.
