Associate University Counsel
The candidate will be responsible for providing counsel and support to the university on a broad spectrum of issues to help fulfill the university’s mission and meet all legal and higher education compliance obligations. Subject matter areas include student affairs, faculty affairs, labor and employment, policy development, Title IX, Clery, intellectual property, research, and others. Responsible for facilitating the review, negotiation, and approval process of contracts, including reviewing, modifying, approving, and routing agreements for execution on behalf of the University. Provides timely and competent legal advice to the university administration on a variety of significant matters, including in the subject matter areas of student affairs, faculty affairs, policy development, labor and employment, intellectual property, research, Title IX, Clery, and others. Understands and manages risk and compliance efforts, including but not limited to policy development and interpretation, risk mitigation and assessments, and the delivery of training related to policies, legal or regulatory requirements for the institution. Effectively coordinate necessary actions with appropriate departments and general counsel (or designee) according to competing, fast-paced, and deadline-driven environments. Remains up to date on legal issues affecting higher education. Review, and negotiate terms and conditions of contracts/agreements and ensure appropriate modifications are incorporated. Serve as a liaison between internal and external parties during contract development and negotiation stages. Monitor contracts/agreements to ensure compliance with terms/conditions, applicable laws, and University policies/procedures. Oversee the organization and maintenance of all records related to contracts/agreements, including an electronic database. Resolve existing or potential contract conflicts in a timely and effective fashion. Analyze and report potential risks that contract changes may pose to the organization to designated University administrators and/or General Counsel (or designee), as appropriate.
