Civil Practice Staff Attorney Bankruptcy
The candidate will represent homeowners in Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy proceedings in both the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, and may serve as a mentor to other staff attorneys in bringing bankruptcy cases. Provide client representation in Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy proceedings as well as in related state and federal court proceedings. Provide client representation and advocacy with local, city, state, and federal agencies. Conduct trainings, community outreach and education. Engage in policy advocacy for legislative reform. Coordinate and collaborate with other groups and organizations. Represent the Civil Practice and The Legal Aid Society in the community. Promote the work of the office, the Foreclosure Prevention Unit and the Civil Practice. Work with pro bono lawyers and partner organizations. Conduct off-site intake, including during evening hours as needed. Other duties as assigned. Admission to the New York State Bar required. Admission to the Eastern and Southern District preferred. 3+ years of experience as a bankruptcy attorney required. Should have knowledge and experience in the areas of foreclosure prevention and consumer law. Excellent written and oral advocacy skills required. Excellent litigation skills required. Demonstrated commitment to and experience in civil legal services required. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team required. Excellent organizational skills required. Experience mentoring and training other attorneys required. Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable.
