Description 

The Counsel, Environmental & Real Estate leads the Environmental Affairs program in support of Rayonier’s U. S. forestry, real estate and resource development businesses.  Works collaboratively across the enterprise to ensure management systems are in place to comply with environmental laws and regulations and relevant corporate policies and practices.  Informs and advises the businesses and senior management, regarding future risks and impacts from new laws, compliance issues or liabilities.  Recommends strategies to mitigate those impacts.  Engages with government agencies, and industry technical and trade associations to identify, track and participate in the development of environmental regulations impacting Rayonier.  Works with the businesses, legal and government affairs staff and other teams to assess environmental requirements and risks and develop appropriate responses.  Assists the businesses in addressing matters relating to Enterprise Risk Management, compliance, permitting and agency interactions and other areas of expertise.  This role also supports the real estate and forestry business units on real estate and commercial transactional matters and assists more senior lawyers in the department.      

Required Qualifications

Education Level Required:

  • Undergraduate degree, preferably in a science-related field, such as biology, environmental engineering, chemistry, aquatic biology, forestry, etc.,
  • J.D. degree with indicia of academic achievement,
  • Admission to the bar of at least one state (Florida or Washington preferred, but not required).         

Experience Required:

  • Five-plus years of law firm or in-house legal experience in environmental law as to major federal and state environmental laws and regulations. 
  • Experience with Enterprise Risk Management, Environmental Compliance Management and Forest Certification Systems preferred but not required. 
  • Experience negotiating and interfacing with internal and external stakeholders, such as regulators, industry groups and community groups desired. 
  • Exposure to real estate and commercial transactional work preferred and desire to gain experience in those areas required.
  • Experience in working with governmental agencies also strongly preferred.
  • Ability to manage outside counsel and work collaboratively with business people, other in-house counsel and paralegals and outside consultants is also a must.

Knowledge/Skills Required: 

  • Environmental laws/regulations and underlying science. 
  • Regulatory development process and associated laws and statutes. 
  • Independent judgment, initiative and strong analytical skills are required. 
  • Successful candidate will possess strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills and a collaborative approach to problem solving.
