State and Local Tax Senior Manager
Responsibilities: Responsible for state and local income tax strategy and operations. Identifies and implements tax planning strategies that result in a lower effective state tax rate while managing the risks. Ensures compliance of transfer pricing policy domestically. Oversees the preparation of tax returns (direct and Indirect), maintains company tax records, prepares filings for tax refunds, and researches inquiries from government agencies regarding filings, compliance, and other claims. Conduct PDS reviews with direct reports to improve skills and performance utilizing PDS as tool to conduct optimal performance discussions, articulate consistent skill evaluations, recommend actions and tactics, and measure progress. Support the widespread use of PDS within the finance organization. Promote and support Company culture within the finance organization. Develop the careers of all SALT team members and support the career development of senior analysts and analysts. Lead state and local tax controversies (Direct and indirect) , which includes preparation of memorandums for discussions with auditors, representing the Company at hearings and appeal meetings, and preparing protests. Create an “audit ready” strategy for all positions and planning undertaken. Develop and maintain tax reserve positions for direct and indirect state and local taxes. Identify opportunities within the domestic structure through working with procurement and supply chain to enhance the operational efficiencies of the business while identifying tax planning strategies that result in a lower effective state tax rate and minimize risk to the business. Transition the SALT team’s current manual calculations around allocation and apportionment, SALT depreciation, etc. to automated processes using ETL tooling. Document and develop controls to support the automation of the processes. Develop domestic tax capabilities at the local level where the company has a significant presence. Monitor legislative changes at the state and local level that may impact the Company’s tax positions. Oversee and/or complete special projects as required. Partner with Government Affairs on State and Local tax legislative strategy to include tax policy, evaluating changes in tax legislation or treatment of items in Sazerac’s jurisdictions and overall tax risk mitigation Partner with Compliance and eCommerce on the direct to consumer strategy of spirits. Assist with the design and implementation of process and controls to ensure state excise taxes are collected, paid and remitted. Establish and maintain formal tax policies, practices and procedures to ensure state and local compliance. Manage and identify state and local credit and incentive opportunities. Assist with the review and analysis of real estate tax assessments for reduction opportunities Create and implement ETL and robotic process automations (RPA) to automate routine tasks as necessary.
