Job Description

IBM Bluemix Infrastructure (SoftLayer), has a global network that is deployed using cutting-edge platforms and we are looking for high quality, driven Network Engineers to join the Network Implementation team within Backbone Engineering. Backbone Engineering is responsible for designing, deploying, implementing and supporting one of the world’s largest and most complex networks.

This position is full-time and we are hiring engineers in Dallas or Houston, TX

Responsibilities include:

Working to review and accept 3rd Party turn over packages (LOA/CFA) in order to ensure facilities and assets meet pre-defined technical specifications

Activation of Transit, Transport, and Peering Circuits to augment network capacity

Troubleshooting and providing Tier 3 support for packet loss and latency on production circuits

Provisioning public and private peering relationships

Maintaining accurate documentation for all internal and 3rd Party Infrastructure and associated layout records

Provisioning and applying traffic engineering policy to transit circuits

Working with customers to ensure efficient and accurate deployment of their Layer 1 connectivity to IBM's network for their Direct Link circuits

Being a subject matter expert (SME) of network topology and standards

Assisting upstream planning, design, and acquisition teams in developing infrastructure requirements, priorities, and delivery date expectations

Troubleshooting and implementing DWDM platforms

Tracking Performance against specific goals, using dashboards and reports to show results

Working with vendors to correct faulty hardware and software

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

BS degree in a technical discipline or equivalent experience

2 years of experience owning and driving technology/networking-related projects

Experience with interconnectivity requirements within carrier hotels including unique patch panel types and port configurations, fiber cabling infrastructure, connector types, optical distribution frames, and splice trays

Proven ability to communicate clearly and concisely, using written and verbal communication skills

An ability to multitask and communicate between multiple internal groups, external providers, and customers of varying technical expertise

Strong written and verbal skills

English: Fluent

Preferred Tech and Prof Experience

Full-time experience working in telecommunications networks with hands-on knowledge of carrier backbone networking

Experience with network engineering and transport systems, preferably in telecommunications networks

Experience with inside and outside plant fiber construction best practices (MPOE, diversity, riser construction, fiber testing, etc.)

A solid understanding of Layer 1 through Layer 3 network services and technologies, including Internet routing protocols, DWDM, GPON, and transport systems

Strong background working with spreadsheets, project management tools and network inventory management systems

An ability to think critically and use a data-driven, analytical approach towards solving complex problems.

Willingness to travel up to 25%
