POSITION SUMMARY:
This position will provide students eligible for reading and dyslexia program with an appropriate scientifically-based, structured, sequential, systematic and multi-sensory dyslexia program and provide academic intervention support and requisite progress monitoring/documentation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement plans to fulfill the requirements of dyslexia support and support for students experiencing difficulty in reading.
  • Maintain accurate written documentation of student work and progress.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the needs of struggling students and students with dyslexia.
  • Work with general education teachers and other staff to support students with dyslexia.
  • Willingness to maintain professional knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to evaluate student progress.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Be a positive role model for students and support for parents. Provide progress reports on regular and as needed basis.
  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level and interests of students.
  • Assist in selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials, including student access to audio books.
  • Establish and maintain open communication with parents, students, principals, teachers and support staff.
  • Provide annual dyslexia parent training and on-going parent support and resources
  • Provide professional development as needed/requested.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Keep informed of and comply with state, district and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  • Compile, maintain and file reports, records and other documents as prescribed in the Dyslexia Handbook within prescribed timeline including progress monitoring and screening.
  • Assess students for dyslexia.
  • Interpret assessment information.
  • Schedule student groups.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Provides support to staff in use of data and progress monitoring tools/assessments to identify students’ areas of strength and areas for growth.
  • Oversees data collection, including kindergarten and first grade dyslexia screenings, and progress monitoring processes.
  • Provides training and technical assistance for teachers as needed in support of the dyslexia.
  • Evaluate the dyslexia program on an annual basis.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited university
  • Valid Texas teacher certificate with required endorsements. Generalist EC-6 or 4-8
  • Ability to instruct students in reading and writing and manage their behavior
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Completion of district-adopted researched-based dyslexia program training (i.e. Reading by Design)
  • Completion of K-3 Reading Academy during the first year of hire
  • Experience in teaching reading and writing in the regular education, special education, or bilingual classroom; experience providing dyslexia interventions preferred.
