Job Summary:

Job Description for Automation Engineering discipline:

Automation Engineers are responsible to design, develop, document, test, and commission automation systems within constraints such as development cost, product quality, product safety, and time. In this job, the engineer is expected to work effectively with other engineering domains, such as mechanical, electrical, and IT to solve cross domain problems that automate equipment and/or processes related to the use of sensors, actuators, and IT infrastructure to accomplish a specific task:

Automation engineers effectively employ expertise related to:


Artificial Intelligence Engineering
Software Control System Engineering
Workflow Automation Engineering


Relationships:

Reports to Software Project Manager or Engineering Manager.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:


Develop and implement sub systems for industrial human-machine automation systems.
Analyze domain problems and identify, adapt, and/or develop technologies from the fields of artificial intelligence, automated and autonomous systems, and industrial automation to address them.
Document and validate automated processes with domain experts.
Evaluate and develop probabilistic state estimation techniques that are relevant and applicable to decision making automated systems.
Integrate systems and software considering qualities such as security, safety, performance and reliability.
Support senior technical team in the creation of a technical roadmap for advanced technologies stack.
Support engineering team in understanding, and overseeing correct implementation of chosen technologies.
Support, participate, and perform technology transfers from technical collaboration projects in areas of planning under uncertainty, machine learning, probabilistic reasoning, and cognitive systems.
Liaise between R&D, research and field operations organizations to promote appropriate decision-making technologies and solutions.


Previous Experience and Competencies:

BS/MS/PHD in Science or Electrical or Mechanical Engineering with software experience or education

Minimum 3 years of relevant industry experience for external hire to be considered for a Senior Level.

Competencies to be kept current:


Expertise in system integration of hardware/software systems
Ability to code, script, architect, create schematics, select and code hardware eg PLC’s and HMI interfaces
Knowledge of multiple protocols such as Modbus, EthernetIP etc
Ability to develop, understand, and implement complex software sub systems
Experience working independently in a large software setting
Excellent communication skills, with proven record of technical mentoring and technical writing
Expertise in artificial intelligence, such as machine learning, automated planning and scheduling
Expertise in industry standards for automation such as PID’s open and closed loop control
Modernization if IT infrastructure to work with Corporate goals on network design and security protocols
Utilize and understand basics of Edge devices to interface control systems to the cloud
Basic Server knowledge for data storage and manipulation
