As the US struggles to deal with one of its worst financial crises in history, businesses are planning to lay off employees and freeze hiring for the last quarter of 2008.
In a survey conducted by Harris Interactive for
USA Today between August 21 and September 9, 2008, it is reported that 10% of US firms are planning to lay off workers and another 63% are planning to implement hiring freezes. The survey included 3,000 hiring managers and
HR professionals and over 6,100 workers in private sectors nationwide.
Matt Ferguson, CEO of CareerBuilder.com, claimed, “Employers are maintaining a conservative approach to recruitment as they maneuver through a weaker economy that has produced its share of casualties.” He also goes on to claim that some sectors, including IT and
healthcare, are still showing growth.
Other workforce trends show that of those workers who found a new job in 2008, one-in-five claim their job search took four months or longer. Workers have also been taking second jobs, are postponing active job searches, and are taking measures to improve future prospects.
