Higher Quit Rate Shows Employees Increasingly Confident of Finding Another Job, EmploymentCrossing.com Finds 2.28 Million Vacancies

February 17, 2013 — Pasadena, California — A key statistic that has come up in the latest JOLTS report that is not getting much coverage in the media is the quit rate.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics, in its Jobs Openings and Labor Turnover Summary (JOLTS) counts the voluntary departure of employees from a particular organization as ''quits''. In December 2012, 2.2 million Americans ''quit'' their jobs.

This is a substantial increase in the number of Americans voluntarily leaving their jobs from the height of the recession in June 2009. At that point of time, only 1.8 million Americans voluntarily quit their jobs. The number of quits (not seasonally adjusted) was essentially unchanged according to the BLS for the entire year of 2012.

CEO Harrison Barnes sees this as a positive sign in the economy. ''An increasing number of Americans are not going to quit their jobs unless they have another one lined up or are sure of getting another job soon.'' Barnes' job search website, EmploymentCrossing.com has been able to track down 2.28 million job openings across the United States as of February 16.

The healthcare industry continues to be the top jobs creator in the country with 411,000 healthcare jobs across the country. Among states, California is still the nation’s leading job creator with 259,000 jobs. The healthcare industry is also number one in California with 36,000 job openings.

The remaining nine industries in the top ten list are:

Sales - 260,000 job openings
Retail - 256,000 job openings
Information Technology – 238,000 job openings
Hospitality- 193,000 job openings
Engineering - 163,000 job openings
Nursing- 144,000 job openings
Customer Service- 117,000 job openings
Financial Services- 109,000 job openings
Accounting -78,000 job openings
