It's Time for a ''Green-Collar'' Job Revolution, Says EmploymentCrossing

September 30, 2008   |  PDF version  PDF version

Pasadena, CA — A ''green-collar'' job revolution is taking the nation by storm as so-called green-collar jobs are increasingly being viewed as the single best solution to the tumultuous recession. EmploymentCrossing, one of world's leading job boards, has also found through its own analyses that the future economy will depend heavily on companies which are fast introducing environmentally friendly products and services. Statistics have clearly demonstrated the fact that as employment rates in the fossil fuel sector are deteriorating at a brisk pace, the best hope for reviving the sluggish job market lies in an increase in green-collar jobs. Fortunately, EmploymentCrossing is already up and running with the task of posting new green jobs every day.

A new report from the United Nations on the impact of the emerging global green economy has revealed that efforts to tackle climate change could result in the creation of millions of new green jobs in the coming decades. Immediate action to tackle climate change, as well as to cope with its effects, is necessary to generate decent jobs, the report states. The report also notes that green-collar jobs can reduce the environmental impact of various enterprises and economic sectors, ultimately to levels that are sustainable.

''Blue-collar jobs and white-collar jobs will have to give way to green-collar jobs if the nation is to effectively face the present sluggish economy and energy crunch,'' says Harrison Barnes, CEO of EmploymentCrossing. ''Though EmploymentCrossing has posted a record number of jobs in recent weeks, we find that job seekers today are more and more interested in having environmentally friendly jobs, and hence insist on working with green-certified companies.''

More than 100,000 people rallied at events across the country last weekend to urge leaders to jumpstart the clean energy economy. The events, which were titled ''Green Jobs Now: A Day to Build the New Economy,'' urged policy makers to create real energy solutions to build a new green economy strong enough to create millions of green jobs and lift people out of poverty. About 650 events and well over 100,000 participants in all 50 states were organized for the rally, which was touted as the largest and most diverse day of citizen action focused on economic issues in American history. There were a host of processions and events across Canada, too, initiated by ''go green'' clubs which included Greenpeace, the Sierra Club, the Council of Canadians, and the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition.

''The future economy will be a ‘clean-energy economy,' where the focus will be centered on energy efficiency through the use of renewable resources and alternative fuels. The path there will not be easy, however, as massive green investment and innovative market policies need to be wedded to greener job opportunities that will help in reviving the present economy,'' adds Barnes.
