Profile

The LMHC provides mental health therapy to college athletes and band members within the confines of the Hampton University Student Counseling Center (SCC). Emphasis will be on providing clinical care, outreach, consultation and support to Hampton University Athletes and Band members. Specifically, the LMHC will be responsible for providing individual psychotherapy, crisis intervention, performance enhancement sessions, and interdisciplinary treatment team consultation services. Other responsibilities include the development and implementation of educational programming and individual/team performance enhancement facilitation and training to meet rising demand of mental health services within these subpopulations. The clinician provides clinical psychosocial assessment, individual therapy, couples therapy and psychoeducation to athletic and band programs. Group therapy and appropriate workshops will be developed and implemented. The LMHC will be responsible for providing outreach presentations to campus and will serve as needed for student crises as they arise. The incumbent provides these services in a very independent fashion with consultative supervision with the Director of the Student Counseling Center and the clinician independently documents the workload in the confidential medical record system.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Independently performs case finding functions and outreach, identifying and screening students for psychosocial needs. Incumbent must possess the knowledge and ability to independently implement treatment modalities, provide counseling or psychotherapy for individuals and groups, specifically related to university Athletes and Band Members.

2. Independently conducts psychosocial assessments. Develops treatment plans in collaboration with the student, the Student Counseling Center, and athletic/band staff if applicable. Incumbent possesses the skills to offer psychosocial interventions and measures outcomes to interventions.

3. Independently identifies high-risk patients and provides crisis intervention services, seeking to address the cause as well as the presenting complaint, coordinates team conferences and serves as liaison to family members, faculty, and other University Personnel.

4. Has working knowledge and experience in use of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures within the context of athletic mental health; this includes acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries.

5. Develops campus education materials/modules and assists with athletic mental health activities as assigned.

6. Provides after-hours/on-call services through a rotational schedule with SCC clinicians.

7. Independently provides consultation services to other university staff, athletic coaches, trainers, band director(s), etc. regarding the psychosocial needs of students and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care. Ability to evaluate LMHC’s clinical practice through professional peer review, case conferences and other SCC organizational means. Incumbent is able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people from varied backgrounds.

8. Able to meet the needs of students while supporting HU missions. Consistently communicates and treats customers (students, HU faculty and staff, Athletic Coaches, etc.) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Incumbent is able to provide the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures.

9. The licensed clinician exercises independent clinical judgment in the practice and provision of client/SCC services and university needs (clinical care, consultation, and education.) The incumbent consults with peers, the SCC Director, and other members of the HU Staff and SCC Director who assumes broad oversight responsibility for the structure and functioning of the SCC to which the incumbent is assigned. The clinician performs duties independently, reporting to the SCC Director, who acts as the immediate supervisor and leave approving official.

10. Provides ethical clinical care in accordance with state licensing laws.

Requirements

Completion of a Doctoral degree in Psychology, Sports Psychology, Counseling or a similar field of study or completion of a Masters Degree in Counseling from a CACREP accredited school and/or a Masters Degree in Social Work and licensure in a state at the independent/clinical practice level. A terminal Masters Degree in Psychology may be considered.

Licensed or currently pursuing clinical licensure (e.g., LPC, LCSW, etc.)

Experience in outpatient mental health, medical settings, and/or University Counseling Centers preferred.

Experience working with college athletes, band, or team-based environments.

Qualifications

This position requires one who is student-centered, accessible and open to providing mental health services to student athletes.

The successful candidate must be able to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff and administrators and serve as a liaison and student advocate when needed.

Must possess the ability to deal with student crises as they arise.

Experience and knowledge of college athlete populations.
