Job Description:

General Summary:

University Ministries (UMin) at Seattle Pacific is comprised of the John Perkins Center (JPC), Campus Ministries (CM) and Church and Community Connections. UMin pastors and staff focus collectively on facilitating worship, discipleship, and reconciliation through ministry events, developing student leaders, and pastoral care relationships.

The John Perkins Center, through connections with campus faculty and departments, and with community leaders and organizational partners, orchestrates community learning opportunities and spaces for critical reflection and dialogue around community development and reconciliation. The Associate Director and Minister of Community Development will join to sustain community engagement from a 3 R's framework and cultivate experiential learning spaces.

Under the direction of the Director, the Associate Director will support community and academic partnerships of the Center, helping to develop and lead integrative programs that provide students with a CCD framework for community engagement and allows the classroom to have Seattle as their educational field. Collaborate with faculty, academic departments and co-curricular partners across the university, and with community leaders and organizational partners. Assist in the operations of the Center and serve as a resource to students and campus in community development and reconciliation efforts. The AD serves as a member of the Office of University Ministries, as the Minister of Community Development and a member of the pastoral team. This position will also model principles of Christian Community Development with professional staff, student leader teams, and sustaining partner relationships.

The AD will administrate and advise student development and programs that build students' cultural capacity and exploration of faith formation in areas of community development and reconciliation through reflection, dialogue, and community engagement. The Associate Director provides leadership, supervision and management in programs and education by leading the initiatives over local community engagement; providing staff and student leadership training in CCD principles and community engagement; and cultivating new and ongoing church and community partnerships. The AD will manage regular operations of the JPC student center on campus, curate communication and publicity, and operationalize major programs and events including the Lecture Series.

Job Duties:

Direct and advise student development and programs in areas of community development and reconciliation: Directing the vision, budget and funding, program development, training, support and student leader oversight for the Center with academic and community-collaborative partnerships.

Liason with faculty and community leaders, mentor and train students, program/event design and development, lead staff/intern hiring, develop curriculum, and manage liability/risks for Center programs. Advise programs such as Urban Involvement, In Context CityQuest/UFDN.

Manage operations of the JPC student center & JPC major events: coordinate the larger campus/community events and operations of the Center

(student center, Annual/Fall Lecture Series, MLK Prayer Breakfast) , major communications and publications from the Center

(website, JPC Newsletter and Perkins Center Prize) and assist in the management of operational and program Center budgets.

UMin & JPC team responsibilities: As part of the University Ministries office, contributes to leading in UMin campus wide area programming and initiatives, serving as a Minister/Pastor level with UMin, a member of the UMin Pastoral team for UG students, attends relevant meetings/events and serves on assigned committees.

Meets with students, staff or faculty in crisis (especially in areas of reconciliation, diversity and inclusion, spiritual formation).

Resource to students and campus: Lead training, advising and speaking opportunities partnered with partner university programs/departments and community partners that come by request,

such as the Orientation, UG Admissions events, student club/ministry retreats, guest speaking in courses, etc.

Cultivate departmental relationships and partnerships across campus and with regional community partners, consulting and making referrals for various decisions of the Center to provide learning opportunities for students.

Attend relevant meetings and events as needed, with University Ministries, Student Formation and Community Engagement, School of Theology, Advisory Council on Diversity & Reconciliation, MLK Prayer Breakfast Committee, CCDA PNW; as this role may be asked to serve on task forces, committees, etc.

Leadership and supervision: Recruitment, hiring and supervision of Graduate Coordinators/Interns.

Appoint Center staff in regards to managing the JPC student center office and programs. Assume responsibility for leading department in the absence of the JPC Director and University Chaplain.

Represents the goals, values and vision of the Perkins Center/CCD and University Ministries.

Requirements:

Bachelors in Education, Community Development, Ministry/Theology, related vocational experience.

2-4 years of increased responsibility in administrative and program experience, developing and leading community engagement/urban/global ministry programs (administrative and budget management, mentoring, training experience).

Experience working with and advising/mentoring young adult or college-age students of diverse backgrounds, with outstanding ability to relate to individually and corporately and communicate sensitively.

Demonstrated experience or competencies for working with diverse clientele, including the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, nationality, and religion of individuals; as well as across student, staff, faculty, parent and community populations.

Experience effectively supporting underrepresented or marginalized populations and a commitment to supportive and inclusive student experiences.

Christian commitment and appreciation for broad range of Christian traditions and theological perspectives, able to cultivate formational practices that serve diverse expressions of faith.

Experience in program development, budget management, event planning, training, and volunteer management.

Professionalism, resourceful, problem-solving skills; relational with strong written and oral communication; competence with attention to detail and flexibility with multiple projects.

Strong collaborator with the ability to network and build relationships with varied stakeholders (students, staff, faculty, community leaders and organizations).

Proficient with Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Forms, Teams, etc).

Flexibility to expand work schedule due to variable work hours, including occasional evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree or higher in Education, Community Development, Ministry/Theology, or related field

Skills and experience in strategic assessment of programs, services and/or student/community learning outcomes.

Experience as a pastor/community outreach leader role in a local church/non-profit organization, or educator or student development professional in a higher education institution.

Experience working or leading within ethnic/cultural or identity-based resource, or community engagement center in higher education.

Understanding of and ability to articulate self-reflexivity and awareness of one's social location
