Profile
A law firm seeks a mid-level Associate with three to five years of litigation experience in California state and federal courts to join its Orange County (Costa Mesa, CA) office on a hybrid engagement facilitated by our recruiting firm. The successful candidate will collaborate with seasoned litigators to handle employment disputes and commercial litigation matters, working closely with in-house teams and senior attorneys.
Duties
Assist with defense-side employment matters, including single-plaintiff lawsuits and wage-and-hour representative or class actions
Provide guidance and counseling on workplace policies, compliance, and employment-related inquiries
Support business litigation by drafting pleadings, motions, and discovery responses in various civil actions
Manage written discovery processes, including interrogatories, requests for production, and responses
Oversee electronic discovery workflows, coordinating with vendors and IT teams to collect, review, and produce relevant documents
Draft and respond to motions, including meet-and-confer letters, briefs, and supporting declarations
Prepare for and participate in depositions, handling both witness examination and defense
Collaborate with senior counsel and clients on case strategy, settlement options, and trial preparation activities
Attend court hearings, case management conferences, and status conferences as needed
Requirements
Three to five years of hands-on litigation experience in California state and/or federal courts, with a focus on employment and business disputes
Demonstrated familiarity with employment law matters, including individual actions and collective or class proceedings
Proven track record handling written discovery, e-discovery platforms, motion practice, and depositions
Exceptional written and oral advocacy skills, including drafting clear, persuasive legal documents and delivering effective courtroom presentations
Strong academic credentials from an accredited law school (e.g., top third of class, law review, moot court participation)
Admission and good standing with the California State Bar
Ability to thrive in a collaborative, team-oriented environment and manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines
Education
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited institution
Evidence of scholastic achievement (e.g., honors programs, moot court, trial advocacy teams) preferred
Certifications
Active admission to the California State Bar (required)
Federal court admission in California (preferred but not mandatory)
Skills
Advanced legal writing and analytical reasoning, capable of dissecting complex statutes and case law
Effective public speaking and courtroom presence, with the capacity to conduct witness examinations and oral arguments
Meticulous attention to detail for document review, fact investigation, and case-management tasks
Proficient in e-discovery tools and document-management platforms (e.g., Relativity, Concordance, or similar)
Collaborative mindset and interpersonal aptitude, fostering strong working relationships with partners, co-counsel, and clients
