Job Title: Patent Prosecution - Patent Agent (Biotech)

Job Overview:
A San Francisco-based law firm is seeking a registered Patent Agent with a doctorate in a life science discipline to support a robust intellectual property practice focused on the biotechnology sector. The ideal candidate will handle a spectrum of patent-related work, including drafting and prosecuting patent applications, conducting due diligence, and advising on freedom-to-operate issues. This role requires close collaboration with scientific innovators and investors and provides the opportunity to contribute to the development and expansion of high-value IP portfolios.

Duties:

  • Draft and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications in the biotechnology domain

  • Interface directly with inventors and scientists to translate complex discoveries into patentable innovations

  • Develop and manage patent portfolios for clients ranging from startups to established companies

  • Analyze prior art, competitive patent landscapes, and freedom-to-operate studies

  • Provide support for IP-related due diligence in financing, M&A, and public offering transactions

  • Coordinate global patent filings in collaboration with foreign counsel

  • Analyze scientific publications and patent literature across various biological fields

  • Prepare responses to office actions and support overall patent strategy execution

Requirements:

  • Active registration to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

  • Minimum of 3 years of direct experience with biotech patent prosecution

  • Demonstrated skill in independently drafting patent applications from disclosures or inventor interviews

  • Proven ability to communicate complex scientific concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects

  • Team-oriented approach with a collaborative mindset

Education:

  • Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology, or related life sciences field

  • Additional expertise in bioinformatics, machine learning, or data science is a plus, though not required

Certifications:

  • USPTO Registration Number required

Skills:

  • In-depth understanding of patent law and prosecution practices specific to the biotechnology industry

  • Proficiency in prior art search and analysis tools

  • Analytical thinking and detail orientation

  • Excellent verbal and written communication

  • Time management and multitasking in a high-paced environment
