Vice President and General Counsel
The candidate will directly supervise an in-house legal department and work with outside law firms on litigation and general commercial matters for the company; will supervise the corporate governance work of multiple entities; the separate Regulatory Compliance department, the legal department reviews and response to policy claim issues supervise claim litigation, and assists with insurance code regulatory compliance issues; also handles general contracting review, outside insurance agent issues, advertising review, and HR issues. Directly supervises an in-house legal department of three attorneys and one paralegal. Work with outside law firms on litigation and general commercial matters. Supervise the corporate governance work of multiple entities. Review and respond to policy claim issues, supervise claim litigation, and assist with insurance code regulatory compliance issues. Handle general contracting review, outside insurance agent issues, advertising review, and HR issues. Work closely with ownership, the senior executive team, and managers at all levels. Should have a JD degree from an accredited U.S. Law School. Legal degree with 20-plus years of broad, legal experience either in an in-house position or at a significant law firm, including senior-level leadership experience. Life insurance industry experience, especially regulatory experience, is highly desirable. HR legal experience is highly desirable, both with in-house advice and EEOC matters. Corporate/commercial litigation experience desirable. Emphasis is on the ability to give detailed executive-level advice and also work in a hands-on manner on multiple projects and manage the department; high drive, initiative, and discretion; senior executive demeanor and management skills.
