Staff Attorney - Community Development
Duties: Will have a wide range of responsibilities aimed at bringing high-quality legal services and practical information to nonprofit organizations, with a focus on housing, shelter, homeless services, and community revitalization. Clients include low-income housing developers, supportive housing groups, homeless services organizations, hunger prevention and food security groups, economic development nonprofits, social service organizations, and other groups that are improving the health, education, economic opportunity, and well-being of New Yorkers. Plan and execute systematic and strategic client outreach to expand legal services to new and existing clients; Advise a substantial and diverse client base of community development and other nonprofit organizations on business law and transactional topics, including governance, contracts, real estate, facilities, and regulatory compliance issues; Identify challenges and opportunities in the nonprofit sector that prompt legal needs, and undertake programs to help address these needs, including a current initiative to help organizations navigate legal issues stemming from the rising cost of real estate; Engage in effective client intake and screening to ready groups for legal help; Provide volunteer support, mentoring, and co-counseling assistance to pro bono attorneys from top law firms and corporate legal departments; Organize and teach workshops, write legal alerts and publications, and represent at pro bono clinics and other events for clients and pro bono attorneys; Work with staff colleagues to ensure quality control, engage in program evaluation, and administer technical assistance grants and contracts; and Support programs and operations, including volunteer recruitment and recognition, outcomes measurement, marketing, fundraising, fee generation, tracking and use of data, special projects, and other duties as requested.
