Position Description:

Introduction

The Access Services Librarian provides leadership and strategic visioning for Ekstrom Library's Access and User Services Department (AUS), which provides the following services: circulation; resource sharing including interlibrary loan and document delivery; course reserves; stacks maintenance (RRS, Compact Shelving, general stacks); and current periodicals and microforms. AUS is supported by 10 full-time staff and up to 50 student assistants. This is a full-time, 12-month faculty librarian position (tenure-track) with administrative and supervisory responsibilities. The position reports jointly to the Associate Dean/Director of Ekstrom Library and the Head, Research Assistance and Instruction.

In this highly collaborative role, the Access Services Librarian will work with AUS unit supervisors and staff and the Director of Ekstrom Library to assist with the development and implementation of library strategies, policies, and procedures for the delivery of services, configuration and maintenance of relevant library systems, provision of access to library resources, and maintenance of a welcoming environment for all patrons in support of the mission and goals of the library and university. The person in this position is expected to research trends in library access services and recommend new approaches to patron services and offerings in coordination with other public service librarians and building service partners.

The Access Services Librarian will also work collaboratively with the Head, Research Assistance and Instruction in support of emerging services for researchers as well as affordable learning initiatives.

As a member of the University Libraries Faculty, the Access Services Librarian will work in accord with the promotion guidelines, engage in scholarly activities through research and publication, and participate in professional organizations, as well as library and campus committees.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage and supervise AUS key functions and staff including public service desks, Interlibrary Loan, Document Delivery/Distance Learning, Robotic Retrieval System/HDS, Current Periodicals & Microforms, Stacks Maintenance, and the Technology Desk to ensure consistent and positive patron interactions and support.
  • Collaborate with librarians in RAI and other departments to provide support for collection reviews for new academic programs, including compiling data on relevant electronic and print resources.
  • Manage access to the library's streaming and physical media collections and works to ensure these collections meet instructional and research-related needs.
  • Support the evaluation of current affordable learning needs on campus and help identify strategic opportunities for collaboration with academic units and departments (OER, course reserves, etc.).
  • Promote library resources and provide instruction and assistance in the humanities and/or social sciences as part of RAI's liaison and research support programs.
  • Identify resource sharing services and/or service enhancements in response to internal and external developments, Fair Use guidelines and user expectations.
  • Oversee customer service development, management, and training among AUS staff and work with the Head of RAI on cross-training initiatives and other strategies to enhance public services on a broad scale.
  • Meets regularly with the Associate Dean/Director of Ekstrom Library and the Head, Research Assistance and Instruction to align public services with larger strategic priorities, including student success, support for advanced researchers, and other areas.
  • Create AUS instructional guides and training materials for appropriate audiences.
  • Assist with staffing service points/working desk hours as needed.
  • Work in accordance with library faculty promotion guidelines and engage in scholarly activities through research and publication as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program (or international equivalent) in library or information science.
  • Experience in academic libraries.
  • Experience managing or leading teams in academic libraries.
  • Experience and/or interest in providing advanced-level research support.
  • Enthusiasm for learning about new and emerging technologies.
  • Enthusiasm for providing library services in face-to-face, online, and hybrid settings.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and an ability to collaborate successfully with diverse populations.
  • Creative and flexible mindset.
  • Potential to meet the University Libraries criteria for promotion.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching in face-to-face and online settings.
  • Experience with and/or familiarity with key trends in affordable learning resources,
  • Interest in relevant skills and competencies to advance student success.
Additional Information:

This is an entry-level, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor with a 12-month annual contract. The minimum starting salary is $46,000 per year. Entry rank and salary are negotiated at the time of offer and are dependent on the experience, professional achievement and assigned rank of the successful candidateThe successful candidate will receive a https://louisville.edu/hr/benefits>comprehensive benefits package, an annual vacation of 22 working days, and support for professional development.  Promotion and tenure require demonstration of scholarship and successfully satisfying other criteria.
