Job Overview:

A prominent law firm based in New Haven, CT, is seeking a highly qualified Patent Agent to support its growing intellectual property practice. The position emphasizes patent prosecution within the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and medical device sectors. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping patent strategies and supporting intellectual property matters for a diverse portfolio of clients.

Duties:

• Conduct detailed assessments of innovation for patentability across scientific and technical domains

• Prepare and file U.S. patent applications with a focus on life sciences technologies

• Manage U.S. patent prosecution and liaise with foreign professionals to handle global filings

• Participate in patent portfolio development, strategy, and due diligence activities

• Perform research and analysis on technical and legal matters involving patents

• Work directly with legal professionals, scientific experts, and business stakeholders to align IP strategies with organizational goals

• Facilitate communication across departments and maintain contact with external IP representatives

Requirements:

• Minimum of 4 years of experience in patent prosecution, ideally within a law firm or corporate settings

• Strong focus on biotech, pharmaceutical, or medical device innovations

• Registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (or eligible to sit for the registration exam soon)

• Admission to a state bar in good standing (if also licensed as an attorney)

• Exposure to mechanical or electrical patents is advantageous

• Familiarity with scientific principles relevant to life sciences inventions

Education:

• Ph.D. in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field

Certifications:

• USPTO registration (required or near-term eligibility)

Skills:

• Demonstrated ability to translate complex scientific data into clear legal arguments

• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities

• Comfortable working both independently and within collaborative teams

• Skilled at managing multiple priorities and adapting to evolving client needs
