Legal Assistant
The candidate will provide a wide range of administration, general support and analysis duties of a highly responsible and confidential nature for the legal department. Will have regular exposure to confidential material and requires a great deal of professionalism, discretion and integrity in dealing with internal and external contacts. Keeps cases organized by establishing and organizing files; monitoring calendars; meeting deadlines; documenting actions; inputting information into file database and case management software; confirming case status with attorney. Helps develop cases by maintaining contact with people involved in the case; scheduling depositions; preparing and forwarding summonses and subpoenas; drafting complaints; preparing and filing discovery requests; preparing responses to opposing counsel; generating status reports. Keeps clients informed by maintaining contact and communicating case progress. Supports a team of litigation, regulatory and commercial attorneys within the department. Responsibility for triaging legal inquiries and providing initial response to internal clients and external parties. Type, proof, copy and distribute correspondence/legal documents. Receive, organize and distribute incoming documents for principals. Assists attorneys in handling assigned files and delivering legal services under attorney supervision. Assists attorneys in effective and efficient resolution of files. Applies specialized knowledge of legal procedures. Provide general administrative support to the team of attorneys in the Adtalem Law Department. Serves as an ambassador for department, proactively seeking to address department and client needs as a thoughtful, engaged and caring partner. Solutions oriented - ability and willingness to adapt, learning and implementing new skills, systems and practices, to meet department and organizational needs. Assists attorneys with travel plans and expense reimbursement requests. Supports the operations group as needed. Provides assistance with document filing and other organizational tasks for the department. Pro-actively Identifies administrative needs and develops appropriate solutions or recommendations to enhance law department efficiency. Maintains calendar(s) for assigned attorneys. Bachelor's degree preferred. Minimum Associates degree required with paralegal certificate preferred. Must have 7-10 years supporting a legal department or senior counsel. Must have experience managing large or internationally based department and preference for past support of a GC/suite level. Must have Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook skills and other Microsoft applications; meeting note taking.
