Profile

Despite medical advances, breast cancer is the most commonly-diagnosed cancer in the U.S. and the leading cause of death in women in their mid‐life. The digital communications specialist will play a critical role in advancing Silent Spring’s mission to reduce the incidence of breast cancer and create healthier environments by supporting our digital communications strategies across a range of platforms. Reporting to the Director of Communications, this person will generate, schedule, measure, and analyze content on social media as well as email. The digital communications specialist will help broaden awareness of our research and impact, expand our reach, and be a voice for Silent Spring,

strengthening the Institute’s thought leadership and influence among scientists, policymakers, advocacy groups, environmental/health nonprofits, and the general public.

Responsibilities:

Create and manage strategy for digital communications that integrates organizational priorities

Write and schedule accurate and engaging social media posts for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and elsewhere

Create social media focused graphics with consistent branding and messaging

Monitor and moderate feedback on social media channels

Conduct regular social listening to identify external content to promote and real-time opportunities to engage with influencers

Track and analyze performance of organic and paid social promotions and generate reports for Communications Director

Create and manage editorial content calendar

Evaluate other platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. If worth pursuing, create a strategy to launch and maintain new accounts

Stay abreast of digital marketing industry trends, research new tools, platforms or channels, and identify opportunities to expand our efforts to better reach target audiences and increase engagement

Take on special projects and writing assignments as needed to support Silent Spring’s public-facing communications including development communications.

Qualifications and skills:

Bachelor's degree plus 2-4 years’ experience in English, communications, or journalism.

Science background a plus

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

Ability

to distill complex scientific information

into

clear, accurate, concise, and engaging headlines and social media posts

for target audiences

Good judgment in selecting content for online posts and promotion, as well as in monitoring and moderating social media posts

Proficiency with Photoshop, Canva, or other graphics editing programs

Experience in Google ads and Google Analytics a plus

Video editing or multimedia storytelling a plus

Ability to work collaboratively with other members of the communications, development, and science teams

Interest in environmental science, toxics, and women’s health.
