A law firm seeks an Automotive Defects Trial Attorney to join its practice in Costa Mesa, California. The successful candidate will work within a high-energy team renowned for pioneering vehicle defect litigation, taking on major manufacturers and developing innovative pressure tactics to maximize client recoveries. This role reports to the Senior Trial Attorney and operates from a modern office adjacent to South Coast Plaza.
Duties
Assist in evaluating and developing case strategies to address complex vehicle defect claims
Collaborate on drafting and finalizing complaints, pleadings, motions to compel, discovery responses, and other litigation documents
Prepare litigation reports, risk assessments, and memos that inform trial and settlement strategy
Attend hearings, depositions, mediations, status conferences, and select focus groups on behalf of clients
Coordinate with experts, build and maintain trust-based relationships, and manage communications with opposing counsel and third parties
Support trial preparation activities, including exhibit organization, witness preparation, and courtroom advocacy for lower-level trials and mediations
Mentor, train, and supervise paralegals or junior staff as needed to ensure the timely completion of case tasks
Monitor legislative developments, industry trends, and relevant case law to identify potential risks and opportunities for clients
Participate in low-level settlement negotiations and attend mediation sessions to help resolve disputes efficiently
Requirements
Active California law license and in good standing with the State Bar
4–8 years of litigation experience, preferably with a focus on vehicle defect, or related complex tort matters
Proven ability to manage a demanding caseload independently while collaborating effectively with a team of attorneys
Strong commitment to ethical practice, sound judgment, and discretion in handling sensitive information
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and persuasive advocacy
Demonstrated critical thinking, proactive problem solving, and attention to detail in fast-paced environments
High emotional intelligence and aptitude for developing and maintaining client and expert relationships
Flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekends to meet trial or filing deadlines
Education
Juris Doctor (J.D.) or equivalent degree from an accredited law school
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
Certifications
Active membership in the California State Bar (or equivalent proof of admission/practice rights)
Skills
Litigation strategy development and case evaluation
Drafting complex litigation documents (complaints, motions, discovery)
Trial preparation, including organization of exhibits and witness preparation
Strong analytical and risk-assessment abilities
Proficiency in legal research and staying current on statutory/regulatory changes
Exceptional interpersonal skills, including negotiation and client counseling
