Job Title: Mid-level Commercial Disputes Associate Attorney
Job Overview:
A nationally recognized law firm based in Irvine, CA, is seeking a mid-level associate with 3-5 years of experience to support its litigation practice, focusing on complex disputes within the health services space. This opportunity is ideal for an attorney who thrives in analyzing regulatory and contractual frameworks in the healthcare sector, particularly in cases involving provider-payor disputes. The role offers hands-on experience, mentorship from seasoned litigators, and exposure to sophisticated matters requiring strategic thinking, nuanced interpretation of health-related agreements, and adept handling of administrative records.
Duties:
Evaluate provider claims involving healthcare coding and billing (e.g., CPT, HCPCS, DRG).
Examine correspondence between health service providers and insurance entities, such as approval/denial notices.
Interpret and assess contracts and provider manuals outlining payer-provider relationships.
Analyze reimbursement clauses, assignment provisions, and necessity definitions within plan summaries.
Review and classify claim denials and underpayments, including those based on medical necessity or procedural downgrades.
Work with administrative documentation to identify appeal rights and account resolution history.
Utilize Microsoft Excel to audit claim datasets—sort, apply pivot tables, and execute VLOOKUP functions.
Exposure to statistical sampling and extrapolation methodologies is advantageous but not required.
Requirements:
3-5 years of litigation experience, ideally focused on healthcare, payor-provider, or insurance-related disputes.
Proven ability to independently manage case components and contribute to team strategy.
Strong drafting, advocacy, and communication skills with attention to detail in complex legal documentation.
High level of comfort with technical tools, including spreadsheet analysis and database research.
Readiness to collaborate with senior attorneys while gradually assuming greater client-facing responsibilities.
Education:
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school
Certifications:
Active membership in good standing with the California State Bar
Skills:
