Job Title: Patent Agent

Job Overview:
A prominent law firm based in Providence, RI, is seeking a skilled Patent Agent to join its dynamic Intellectual Property group. This opportunity is offered through a legal recruiting firm on behalf of the law firm. The ideal candidate will bring at least four years of experience in patent prosecution, particularly within the life sciences domain, and will contribute to high-level patent drafting, portfolio strategy, and collaborative IP efforts across scientific disciplines.

Duties:

• Assess the patentability of innovations in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and related fields

• Draft, prepare, and submit U.S. patent applications

• Manage U.S. patent prosecution and liaise with foreign associates on global patent matters

• Assist with IP portfolio development and due diligence in transactional contexts

• Conduct research and analysis on patent laws and scientific advancements

• Collaborate closely with legal teams, scientific advisors, and clients on IP-related strategies

• Coordinate with internal teams and external partners on interdisciplinary IP projects

Requirements:

• At least 4 years of hands-on experience in patent prosecution within a law firm or corporate environment

• Proven focus in biotechnology, medical devices, or pharmaceutical patent matters

• Demonstrated ability to independently handle patent drafting and prosecution

• Strong analytical, research, and writing skills for technical legal documents

• Capacity to manage multiple IP matters and work across disciplines

Education:

• Ph.D. in a life sciences field such as molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, or a related discipline

Certifications:

• Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (or eligibility to take the Patent Bar)

Skills:

• In-depth knowledge of life sciences technologies and patent law frameworks

• Familiarity with patent matters in adjacent technical areas, such as mechanical or electrical innovations (preferred)

• Effective communicator with a collaborative mindset

• Detail-oriented, proactive, and organized in approach to complex IP matters
