Job Overview

A law firm seeks a Patent Agent to join its Intellectual Property team in Austin, TX. This role involves performing complex client work, preparing draft patent applications, and responding to communications from the USPTO. The position requires a high level of professional capability and skill, assisting attorneys in delivering quality legal services efficiently and cost-effectively.

Duties

  • Prepare draft patent applications incorporating scientific aspects of inventions.
  • Draft responses to communications from U.S. and foreign patent offices.
  • Discuss scientific aspects of inventions with clients and inventors.
  • Act as liaison between inventors and the Patent & Trademark Office.
  • Evaluate and report on technological aspects of inventions.
  • Advise attorneys on general and specific technologies.
  • Draft, organize, and analyze documents.
  • Conduct regulatory and factual research.
  • Coordinate workflow with outside service providers.
  • Organize and prioritize tasks under time constraints.
  • Identify and solve complex patent issues.
  • Provide direction to legal support staff.
  • Stay updated on technology trends and patent prosecution issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering preferred.
  • Licensed to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office preferred.
  • Strong investigative and problem resolution skills.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage and impart confidential information.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse individuals.
  • Knowledge of patent documentation standards.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks efficiently.
  • Proficiency in various software packages.
  • Ability to travel as needed.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering preferred.

Certifications

  • Licensed to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office preferred.
