Job Overview:
A law firm is seeking a skilled Patent Agent to join its Intellectual Property team. This position will be responsible for preparing draft patent applications and responses to communications from the USPTO. The role requires performing highly complex client work involving scientific and technological aspects of inventions. This position will assist attorneys in providing high-quality legal services in an efficient and cost-effective manner. Ideal candidates should have a background in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering, and possess excellent administrative and academic credentials.

Duties:

  • Prepare draft patent applications, particularly incorporating the scientific aspects of inventions.
  • Draft responses to communications from U.S. and foreign patent offices regarding scientific and factual matters.
  • Communicate with clients and inventors about the scientific aspects of inventions and provide attorneys with detailed reports on those discussions.
  • Act as a liaison between inventors and the Patent & Trademark Office throughout the patent application process.
  • Evaluate and report on technological aspects of inventions, advising attorneys on general and specific technologies.
  • Conduct research on technology and assist in investigating specific inventions.
  • Draft, organize, analyze, review, and summarize documents related to patents.
  • Review and analyze client files and conduct regulatory and factual research.
  • Coordinate workflow with outside service providers and vendors.
  • Organize and prioritize tasks, ensuring they are completed within time constraints in a cost-effective manner.
  • Identify complex patent issues, analyze them, and implement solutions.
  • Provide direction and guidance to legal support staff as needed.
  • Stay updated on technology trends and make recommendations on technology needs.
  • Engage in continuing education to remain current on patent prosecution issues.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering (preferred).
  • Licensed to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (preferred).
  • Strong investigative and problem-resolution skills.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and draw conclusions from research findings.
  • Expertise in drafting complex patent documentation in the relevant technology field.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical information.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
  • Flexibility to work overtime or on weekends as needed to meet deadlines or during peak workload periods.
  • Ability to travel locally and out of town to meet client needs.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering (preferred).

Certifications:

  • Licensed to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (preferred).

Skills:

  • Advanced written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficient in using various software applications and office equipment.
  • Ability to maintain and organize recordkeeping systems and procedures.
  • Expertise in managing confidential information.
