Profile

General Counsel
The candidate will oversee all legal matters; strategic and operational and advise the Superintendent, Board of School Commissioners, and the senior management team accordingly. Assume ultimate responsibility for ensuring district compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Review all public record requests and delegate them to the appropriate department. Draft, review, and interpret district contracts and review Memoranda of Understanding that are crafted for school partnerships. Implement and manage a contract review process across departments. Participate in the definition and development, as needed, of district policies, procedures, and programs. Provide counsel and oversight of all litigation, selecting and supervising outside counsel, judging the merits of major litigation and making recommendations to the Board of School Commissioners on settlements of disputes, if warranted. Collaborate with the Chief Finance Officer and Chief Human Resources Officer to set the vision and effectively manage risk for the district. Act as a resource for the interpretation of existing or proposed laws and regulations that could impact the district. Maintain current knowledge of legal issues of importance through participation in continuing legal education and membership in the appropriate bar and professional associations. Provide an overview of case summaries for the Board of School Commissioners in the executive session. Collaborate with Chief of Human Resources and Finance to outline bargaining strategy. Assist the Employee Relations team to assess and react to a sensitive situation. Review and prepare EEOC complaint response. Support Title IX work. Brief cabinet and superintendent on high-profile legal matters. Advise cabinet on legal risks to decisions on school operations. Must have J.D./Masters of Law required. Should preferably have 8 years experience in legal work focused on contracts, liability, and labor law. Familiarity with the K12 or higher education landscape is an asset.
