Job Overview:
A prominent national law firm is seeking an Intellectual Property Associate with 2–4 years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution. This opportunity is ideal for a motivated lateral associate interested in joining a dynamic, client-focused IP team. The role involves working across a multidisciplinary platform serving clients in a variety of technical fields. This position is being recruited on behalf of the firm by a legal recruiting agency.

Location

• Columbia, SC

Duties:

• Prepare and prosecute patent applications for a diverse client base

• Conduct due diligence for IP-related transactions (preferred but not required)

• Draft and analyze patentability, freedom-to-operate, and invalidity opinions

• Collaborate with inventors, in-house counsel, and technical experts

• Provide strategic IP counsel to clients across industries

• Maintain compliance with USPTO procedures and filing deadlines

• Participate in client meetings and support broader IP litigation or transactional teams as needed

Requirements:

• 2–4 years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution

• Background in handling patent filings with the USPTO

• Client-facing experience and ability to independently manage matters

• Due diligence experience a plus

Education:

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school

• Undergraduate degree in mechanical, electrical, chemical engineering, computer science, or similar technical field

Certifications:

• Active bar license in a state where the firm has an office (SC preferred)

• Admission to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

Skills:

• Strong technical writing and legal drafting capabilities

• Excellent analytical, organizational, and research skills

• Effective communicator with both legal and technical audiences

• Detail-oriented with the ability to manage deadlines and complex projects
