Job Overview:
A leading national law firm is seeking a Patent Prosecution Associate Attorney to support its expanding Intellectual Property practice. This role is ideal for early-career legal professionals with a background in mechanical engineering and a passion for patent law. The ideal candidate brings 1–3 years of patent prosecution experience and a commitment to excellence in client service. This position offers the opportunity to work with a dynamic and collaborative team across multiple office locations.
Location:
Duties:
Prepare, file, and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications in mechanical and related technologies
Conduct prior art searches, patentability analyses, and freedom-to-operate reviews
Provide strategic counseling on IP portfolio development and management
Collaborate with inventors, technical experts, and legal teams to develop comprehensive patent strategies
Communicate with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and international patent offices
Draft legal opinions and support due diligence for mergers, acquisitions, and licensing
Requirements:
1–3 years of experience in patent prosecution
Experience with mechanical engineering-related subject matter
Excellent academic credentials and a demonstrated commitment to client service
Strong time management and organizational abilities
Ability to work independently and in team-oriented environments
Education:
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school
Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering (required)
Certifications:
Admission to the bar in at least one U.S. jurisdiction (required)
Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (preferred or must be obtained promptly)
Skills:
Strong legal research and technical writing abilities
Effective communication with technical and non-technical audiences
Detail-oriented with sound analytical judgment
Familiarity with patent prosecution tools and procedures
Collaborative approach to solving complex legal and technical challenges
