FLU Legal Assistant

The candidate will review, analyze, and assist in the collection of debts in criminal cases, including restitution and fines. Review, analyze, and evaluate civil collection referrals and implement applicable measures to collect civil judgments. Review incoming material and independently determine the need for assembly and preparation of a variety of legal documents, e.g., complaints, motions, orders, and answers. Conduct asset investigations in appropriate cases to recover restitution owed to crime victims. Coordinate with the US Attorney Office victim/witness staff to ensure adherence to current departmental guidelines relating to victims' rights and services responsibilities. Notify and assist appropriate federal agencies and individual victims with procedures for recovery of victim compensation. Draft appropriate correspondence and pleadings for FLU Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA), including complaints, motions and briefs. List cited cases, opinions and miscellaneous references in briefs and verify citations and statutory references contained in legal documents. Prepare recurring legal documents that conform to applicable rules governing style and format. Provide litigation support required to collect criminal and civil debts and to assist the FLU AUSA as needed, including management of discovery and case-related electronic databases. Provide legal assistant support to AUSA as needed, including filing and record maintenance. A paralegal Certificate or 3 years of experience in a legal environment is required. Must have experience with conducting legal research utilizing Westlaw or Pacer. Requires the ability to verify legal citations in various legal documents. Requires ability to utilize Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Prior experience with collections of civil/criminal debts or recovery of restitution is helpful. Experience with eDiscovery databases and or case management databases is helpful.
