VP, Assistant General Counsel - Employment
The candidate will serve as a key legal advisor to our People and business teams on U.S., multi-jurisdictional and global labor and employment, employee relations, and policy-related matters and provide advice and legal support related to compliance with the myriad of global, federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing the workplace. Provide legal, strategic, and business advice and support on day-to-day employee relations matters, such as recruiting, hiring, performance, discipline, grievances, separations, terminations, investigations, and alleged misconduct or noncompliance with Company policies or processes. Managing and driving the strategy of the company’s labor and employment litigation and claims, including working with outside counsel and internal teams to develop and execute effective litigation/claim management strategies while providing proactive legal advice to mitigate present and potential future risk and exposure. Assisting and/or advising on sensitive internal employment-related matters and investigations, including potential violations of Company policies and interacting with/responding to agency or regulatory authorities. Drafting and advising employment-related agreements and documents, including confidentiality, settlement, and employment agreements, as well as in connection with commercial and strategic transactions. Provide counsel and strategic guidance to cultivate strong collaborative relationships with labor unions and works councils. Provide legal support and guidance with respect to compensation and benefits-related matters, such as FLSA and compensation and equity incentive plans. Support the GC and Chief People Officer as required with respect to executive compensation and governance-related matters, including SEC disclosures, governance, and Board (or its committees) support as necessary. Develop, execute and enhance global employment and other related training programs and initiatives in an effort to promote global and other applicable best practices. Advising on international/global related data privacy matters as well as responses to third-party, regulatory, or agency surveys, questionnaires, and requests related to Company compliance with policies and/or applicable laws. Provide legal and business support for the Company’s diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and priorities. Assisting the GC and legal team in enhancing overall team operational excellence and performance initiatives and processes, such as law firm analytics, selection, and management to minimize legal spending while maximizing positive outcomes. Advising and assisting the legal team as necessary on a variety to other complex legal matters, such as compliance, litigation, commercial contracts, SEC disclosure, etc. Collaborating with internal stakeholders at all levels to effectively minimize legal risks, while supporting and assisting in the achievement of the Company’s business and strategic objectives. Proactively identifying legal risks and developing mitigation strategies to protect the interests of the Company. Analyzing new business concepts and providing appropriate legal guidance. Lead the legal team employment practice and enhance the service offerings and capabilities of the in-house employment team. Establish credibility and operate as a strategic consultant to executive/senior leaders and the board of directors (or its committees). Develop governance and legal initiatives to reduce corporate legal risk. Identify opportunities for cost reduction and ensure efficient usage of external counsel and other partnerships. Should have BS/BA from an accredited college/university; Juris Doctorate from a nationally accredited law school; actively licensed to practice law as in-house counsel and in good standing; 15+ years of progressive labor and employment experience, ideally gained through a combination of large law firm and in-house roles; prior experience in the manufacturing or industrial industry in a large global company; prior leadership experience leading or managing employment, labor or litigation matters or team; prior experience serving as a trusted advisor to senior/executive leadership teams/leaders or a committee of the board of directors, with a proven ability to guide them through sophisticated employment, legal, business, and related matters; prior experience conducting sensitive, internal, government or related investigations and developing employment and compliance-related training programs and initiatives; prior experience advising on a broad range of other complex legal matters, such as data privacy, litigation, commercial contracts, and SEC governance; prior experience advising on matters related to executive compensation and governance-related matters; demonstrated business acumen, strong analytical skills, and the ability to grasp important business, legal, and financial issues facing the Company; outstanding interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to build strong relationships across functions and to communicate effectively with senior business leaders, as well as other professionals and colleagues at all levels of an organization. Should be highly creative and strategic mindset and approach to litigation; anticipating future business, competitive, and legal risks and looking for creative solutions and opportunities; exceptional judgment and ability to quickly assess business challenges, make timely, pragmatic recommendations under pressure, and identify, prioritize, and resolve issues quickly and independently; ability to thrive in a dynamic, innovative, and highly-matrixed corporate organization.
