A law firm seeks an experienced Data Privacy and Governance Specialist to join its global team in New York, NY. This hybrid position offers the opportunity to lead and support the firm’s data protection, cybersecurity, and governance efforts. The ideal candidate will have at least six years of legal or risk management experience, with a passion for data privacy, incident response, and navigating evolving global privacy laws. This role is perfect for a strategic thinker with strong communication skills, able to advise stakeholders and lead cross-functional initiatives in a fast-paced environment.

Duties:

  • Advise on global compliance with data privacy and data governance laws, ensuring adherence to privacy regulations in the US and APAC regions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement and streamline privacy programs, ensuring consistency across jurisdictions.
  • Support the management and response efforts to data incidents, guiding incident response protocols.
  • Contribute to the development of the firm's AI governance program, offering strategic insights on data handling and privacy by design.
  • Partner with technology stakeholders to ensure sound data management practices.
  • Develop and maintain policies, documentation, and training materials related to data privacy and governance best practices.
  • Lead the development and execution of training and communication plans to keep all employees informed on privacy regulations and data governance.
  • Establish relationships with key stakeholders, particularly in the United States, to facilitate privacy compliance program updates.
  • Provide mentorship and support to junior team members in their professional development.
  • Assist in the Chief Privacy Officer’s initiatives and responsibilities, including the development and delivery of data privacy solutions.

Requirements:

  • Strong academic credentials with a proven track record in data privacy, information security, or risk management.
  • At least six years of experience in providing practical, business-focused advice on data privacy and governance issues.
  • Experience working in a global corporate or professional services environment.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical processes in a business-friendly manner.
  • Strong IT skills with a keen interest in technology and innovation.
  • Ability to independently manage and prioritize a demanding workload.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to work effectively with diverse teams and business stakeholders.
  • Experience managing global business change projects is a plus but not required.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent degree (preferred)
  • A relevant data privacy certification, such as CIPP/A, CIPP/E, or CIPM, is preferred but not required.

Certifications:

  • CIPP/A, CIPP/E, CIPM (preferred)

Skills:

  • Expertise in global privacy laws and governance, particularly in the US and APAC regions.
  • Strong project management skills, especially in managing data protection initiatives.
  • Ability to translate complex legal and technical concepts into actionable business solutions.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with senior management and various business functions.
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with data privacy and security tools and frameworks.
