Senior Director, Intellectual Property
The candidate will develop, manage, and champion company’s comprehensive IP strategy by developing and maintaining company’s international patent portfolio; managing outside counsels’ patent preparation and prosecution efforts; working closely with the development and manufacturing teams to identify and harvest patents; developing efficient patent strategies and processes; monitoring competitor and invalidation activity; and managing the IP budget. Analyze and develop a successful global patent strategy and processes. Develop and maintain company’s global patent portfolio. Work closely with development and manufacturing professionals to identify patentable inventions, participating in internal invention disclosure assessments, and providing guidance regarding the patentability of inventions under review. Manage outside counsels’ patent preparation and prosecution efforts including reviewing applications and prosecution materials prepared by outside counsel and providing technical and legal commentary to ensure overall application quality. Monitor competitor activity, including developing patentability, validity, infringement, and freedom-to-operate opinions. Initiate and control measures to invalidate third party patent rights. Educate internal teams with regard to company IP policies and the importance of IP. Manage the IP budget and sets priorities for investment in intellectual property. Handle minimal Trademark oversight. JD degree from an ABA accredited law school and 10+ years of experience in IP law in the life sciences sector required. Admission: in good standing to any state bar; in good standing with the USPTO required. Relevant life sciences degree or experience (immunology, cell biology, etc.) required. Experience: drafting and prosecuting patents in a law firm or in-house legal department; managing a patent portfolio; working with international patents; with drug life cycle management required. Substantial (5-7 years) law firm training is desired. In-house experience (3-6 years) at a pharmaceutical company desired. Experience managing a budget preferred. Superior intellect, with the ability to think critically and make clear and well-reasoned decisions and outstanding service mentality (proactive, immediately responsive; superb interpersonal skills) required. Exceptional oral and written communication skills required.
