Senior Patent Counsel
The candidate will be responsible for: Develop and manage a global legal framework for the protection of Cook's intellectual property. Manage, and provide oversight and direction for the global patent team. Thinks strategically, assists and is a trusted advisor in determining long term strategy as well as conducting day-to-day responsibilities as position and function mature. Manage outside counsel relationships and budget related to intellectual property. Provide support and leadership in process improvements and maturation of the function. Provide practical legal advice regarding intellectual property and global portfolio management that furthers business strategies/objectives. Assist with intellectual property due diligence in mergers and acquisitions and other strategic initiatives that involve Cook's intellectual property. Researches, evaluates and advises management and other attorneys on recent or prospective changes in laws and regulations. Manages relationships by developing rapport, building trust, and creating value in relationships. Effectively communicates across functions, divisions, and with both internal and external stakeholders. Influences by encouraging others to change their mindset and/or behaviors to achieve positive results. Encourages the open expression of opinions and disagreements. Effectively gains commitment with others to produce high quality work. Manages conflict in a way that recognizes and manages differing opinions and ideas and refocuses them in a positive and productive manner. Ability to multi-task and multi-deadline a large variety of projects effectively, on time and in a cost-efficient manner. Identifies legal training needs and requirements, particularly related to intellectual property, and assists with the development and delivery of training as necessary. Supervise one or more lawyers, paralegals or administrative assistants. Foster and maintain a workplace culture respectful and supportive of individual differences. Ability to remain calm and receptive in fast paced situations. Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and integrity. Must have the ability to work autonomously as necessary. Maintain regular and punctual attendance. Must maintain company quality and performance standards. Must strictly adhere to safety requirements. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Comply with the rules of professional conduct for attorneys, as required by the state of licensure. Must have J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school, licensed to practice law in at least one of 50 states. Must be registered to practice before the USPTO. Background in life sciences or biomedical engineering preferred. Intellectual property legal experience of 10-15 years, in a law firm, government, in-house or a combination essential. Must have experience and participation in projects to reduce costs and improve processes and drafting and implementing intellectual property policies and procedures.
