Law School Internship Program, Spring 2021
The program provides law school students with invaluable legal experience in the County. The program has been implemented to allow a student in the Criminal Justice field to observe and participate in all facets of a Criminal Investigation and due process through the Criminal Court System. Will work in the Special Prosecutions Division. Interns have the opportunity to receive two hands-on experiences in the preparation of the prosecution of criminal cases in either District Court Division or Circuit Court Division. Will be assigned to a full time Assistant District Attorney and/or Division Chief who will supervise them. From time to time the intern will be assigned to others within the State's Attorney's Office to include other prosecutors, detectives, and for at least one day, personnel from the victim/witness advocacy unit. Obtain and review evidence for assigned cases. Read and review police incident reports, investigation reports, criminal/driver's records, medical reports, lab reports and others. Write a factual narrative of the events of the case and make a recommendation to the Assistant State's Attorney on how the case should progress. Identify and analyze legal issues. Research applicable case law. Interview victims, witnesses, law enforcement officers and others in preparing assigned cases. Trial team support in the courtroom. Legal research, writing briefs, correspondence, pleadings, motions and petitions. Support Assistant State's Attorney in the course of preparing for trial and accompany them to court. Observe the various aspects of criminal case prosecution, including preliminary hearings, jury trials, bail hearings, arraignment hearings etc. Accompany prosecutors to interviews with victims and/or witnesses. Based upon individual progress in this program, students have the potential to negotiate plea agreements, present pleas in court and participate in misdemeanor trials before a judge and/or jury.
