Privacy Lawyer
A Houston-based law firm is seeking an experienced attorney with a strong background in privacy law to support its data protection, privacy, and cybersecurity practice. The role involves advising a diverse clientele on domestic and international privacy compliance strategies, data governance, and risk mitigation. The ideal candidate is adept at navigating both U.S. and global privacy regulations and brings an innovative, forward-thinking approach to counseling in evolving areas such as digital products, cross-border transfers, and regulatory investigations.
Advise on federal, state, and international privacy regulations, including GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, HIPAA, COPPA, TCPA, and the FTC Act
Develop and assess privacy programs, policies, and operational risk strategies
Counsel on international data transfers, localization rules, and global compliance alignment
Draft and negotiate privacy-related contracts, including vendor and data-sharing agreements
Advise on technology-related privacy issues, including AI, digital advertising, and data analytics
Provide support onthe privacy dimensions of corporate transactions and M&A due diligence
Assist with enforcement actions, regulatory requests, and consumer privacy complaints
Contribute to incident response plans and collaborate with forensic teams on data breach events
Participate in tabletop exercises and training sessions around data protection readiness
Offer guidance on internal data governance frameworks and enterprise-level risk practices
3-7 years of experience in privacy law within a law firm or corporate legal department
Familiarity with global data protection laws, frameworks, and enforcement trends
Strong analytical and advisory capabilities; ability to manage complex legal assessments
Excellent written and oral communication skills for client-facing engagements
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and outside consultants
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school
Admission to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
CIPP/US, CIPT, or comparable privacy certification preferred (not mandatory)
Deep understanding of U.S. and global privacy regimes
Experience drafting legal documents and managing regulatory risk
Familiarity with incident response procedures and risk reporting frameworks
Competency in technology law, including AI and digital compliance
Strong interpersonal skills and business acumen
