Job Title: Patent Agent (Biomedical Device)
Job Overview:
A distinguished law firm located in San Francisco, CA, is seeking a Patent Agent with a technical background in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, material sciences, or closely related technologies. This opportunity is ideal for professionals with a strong command of U.S. patent prosecution procedures, an aptitude for complex technologies, and an interest in collaborating with inventors and legal teams. The position provides exposure to a range of intellectual property matters, including patent portfolio strategy, prior art analysis, and occasional support on IP-related transactions.
Duties:
Draft patent applications, incorporating relevant scientific and technical elements
Prepare responses to U.S. and international patent office actions
Analyze inventions, perform literature and patentability searches, and advise on IP strategy
Communicate technical details effectively with inventors and internal stakeholders
Collaborate with the USPTO on all stages of the patent application process
Provide support in IP due diligence and portfolio management projects
Stay current with evolving technologies relevant to biomedical and mechanical inventions
Maintain records and generate reports used for IP workflow tracking and analytics
Engage in continuing legal education to maintain active USPTO registration
Requirements:
Minimum of 3 years of patent prosecution experience
Demonstrated familiarity with medical device technologies
Previous exposure to patent portfolio analysis or IP diligence is preferred
Experience with PTAB proceedings is considered a plus
Ability to manage multiple priorities under time-sensitive deadlines
Familiarity with IP docketing tools and document management systems
Education:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, or related discipline
Advanced degrees (M.S. or Ph.D.) are considered a strong asset
Certifications:
Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
Eligible to sit for the Patent Bar if not already admitted
Skills:
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities in technical and legal contexts
Exceptional written and verbal communication capabilities
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel)
Ability to work independently while engaging with diverse teams
High level of professionalism, discretion, and organizational skill
Comfortable working in a hybrid schedule and adapting to workload peaks
Job Location:
San Francisco, CA (hybrid work schedule requiring minimum 3 days/week onsite)
