Fall Law Student Internship Program

The intern will have structured introduction to Pennsylvania criminal justice, as well as gradual immersion into direct criminal prosecution experiences ranging from Legal research and writing, all the way up to supervised jury trials, depending on student certification and availability of appropriate cases. Program is designed to allow interns to gain an excellent understanding of what it takes to be a prosecutor from the time a defendant is charged with a crime to the time of trial, and the final exhaustion of a defendant’s appellate remedies in both state and federal appellate courts. This includes assisting prosecutors at preliminary hearings, and during criminal jury trials. Specifically, interns will work with prosecutors in the office on research projects and preparation for cases currently being prosecuted, and, if certified, interns will be able to gain first-hand experience by conducting actual court hearings under the supervision of a licensed attorney. Interns/externs will also have an opportunity to write legal memoranda, briefs for appeals pending before the Pennsylvania Superior Court, and, if possible, attend oral argument. Occasionally, after displaying sufficient competence in public legal argument, have allowed certified legal interns to present their oral argument to the Pennsylvania Superior Court. Etail in-depth research and analysis of legal issues, as well as preparation of legal memoranda and briefs that will be submitted to the Courts of Common Pleas, Pennsylvania Superior Court, and Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Upon completion of either Summer, or Semester programs, interns are expected complete the program with a writing sample. Internships will require a commitment of 12-40 hours per week depending on individual schedules.
