Assistant General Counsel - State Court Litigation - Workers’ Compensation
The candidate will be representing the firm at the Illinois Workers Compensation Commission and state court. Will be responsible for the defense of the firm in workers’ compensation cases, working directly with the firm’s third party administrator (CCMSI) to advise on claims handling, strategy, and data analytics, as well as managing related recovery efforts including subrogation and affirmative litigation. Collaborating and providing guidance to appellate counsel on workers’ compensation matters. Working closely with the firm Talent’s workers’ compensation manager, CCMSI, and will partner with other stakeholders to coordinate benefits across units. Managing an active workers compensation caseload and exercising independent judgment on complex issues related to. Providing supervision and guidance to assistant general counsels and staff. Providing client counseling, advice, guidance and support across a network of schools and departments. Working cooperatively with supervisors, attorneys and staff within the Law Department. Developing and maintaining professional, client-centered and productive relationships with diverse group of the firm departments, schools and agents. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required. Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school is required. Should have 1+ years of legal experience, inclusive of internships, externships and/or clerkships. Should have 2+ years of workers compensation practice experience, including direct experience counseling clients is preferred. Additionally, experience in insurance defense, declaratory actions, breach of contract, affirmative litigation, municipal benefits and collections is preferred. Should be licensed and authorized to practice law in the state of Illinois.
