Job Overview:
A nationally recognized law firm is seeking an Intellectual Property Associate Attorney with 2–4 years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution. This is a unique opportunity for a lateral associate to join a collaborative and expanding IP practice with a focus on delivering client-centered, strategic intellectual property counsel. The ideal candidate will bring a strong technical background in engineering or computer science and be registered with the USPTO. This recruitment is being conducted on behalf of the firm by a legal recruiting agency.
Location:
Boston, MA
Duties:
Prepare and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications
Advise clients on intellectual property strategy, patentability, and infringement matters
Conduct due diligence investigations related to IP portfolios (optional but valued)
Collaborate with inventors, in-house counsel, and technical experts
Draft patentability, freedom-to-operate, and validity opinions
Support litigation or licensing teams as needed on patent-related matters
Stay current on developments in U.S. and international patent law
Requirements:
2–4 years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution
Solid understanding of U.S. patent procedures and IP portfolio strategy
Due diligence experience is a plus
Admitted to the USPTO
Admitted and in good standing with the Bar in a U.S. jurisdiction where the firm operates
Education:
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school
Undergraduate degree in mechanical, electrical, chemical engineering, or computer science (or a similar technical field)
Certifications:
Active USPTO registration (required)
State Bar license in good standing in applicable jurisdiction(s)
Skills:
Strong legal research, writing, and communication skills
Analytical thinking with the ability to convey technical and legal concepts clearly
Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills
Comfortable managing client communications and deadlines independently
Collaborative team player who thrives in a multidisciplinary practice
