Job Overview: A law firm in Seattle, WA, is seeking a Patent Agent And/Or Technical Specialist to join their team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for preparing, filing, and prosecuting patent applications before the US Patent and Trademark Office, conducting prior art searches, performing patentability analysis, and engaging in IP due diligence. Additionally, the role involves practice development activities, client relationship management, and providing substantive client correspondence.

Duties:

  • Prepare, file, and prosecute patent applications before the US Patent and Trademark Office
  • Conduct prior art searches and analysis
  • Perform patentability analysis
  • Engage in IP due diligence
  • Develop and maintain client relationships through practice development activities
  • Prepare substantive client correspondence
  • Instruct local counsel for foreign filings and Office Actions
  • Assist in patent clearance studies and other patent-related opinion projects
  • Apply advanced concepts in life sciences fields, particularly molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry
  • Study and analyze scientific or technical documents, including previously published patent documents, to assess patentability, novelty, and inventiveness
  • Convert prior provisional applications into utility applications
  • Convert foreign filed applications into U.S. applications
  • Convert U.S. applications into foreign applications

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or graduate degree) preferably in electrical engineering; degrees in computer science, physics, computer engineering, or mechanical engineering will be considered
  • 2 years of experience prosecuting or examining patent applications in the electrical arts, preferably display and battery technology and optics
  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office or eligible to sit for the USPTO patent agent exam
  • Excellent writing and research abilities
  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication
  • Strong organizational skills

Education and Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or graduate degree) preferably in electrical engineering
  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office or eligible to sit for the USPTO patent agent exam

Skills:

  • Advanced understanding of life sciences fields, particularly molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry
  • Proficiency in prior art searches and patentability analysis
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational abilities
  • Ability to develop and maintain client relationships
  • Experience with patent prosecution in electrical arts, preferably display and battery technology and optics
