Profile

The Burlington School District seeks an energetic, skilled instructional assistant to fill a full time position to support Swahili-speaking students at the high school and middle school level. We are looking for a candidate who is proficient in both English and Swahili and has an understanding of the Burlington School system. This position requires cultural humility, the ability to remain calm in addressing challenging situations and the ability to inspire and encourage students to meet their most rigorous potential.

Candidate will support students in the classroom in both middle schools and high school, following the lead of classroom teachers and using a Restorative Practice approach to proactively ensure that all students feel safe, seen, heard, valued, and respected within our community. For the 2021 - 2022 school year, this position will be focused on providing support in Hunt Middle School, Edmunds Middle School, and Burlington High School.

Qualifications:

Proficient in Swahili and English

Experience with youth

An understanding of the Burlington School System

Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with students, parents and school staff.

Job Responsibilities/Duties:

Provide instructional support and coordination between teachers and students.

Facilitate conversations and activities with students around issues of academic achievement as well as race, equity, and fostering a restorative community.

Provide consistent support to Swahili-speaking students throughout classroom and broader school experiences.

Facilitate small group conversations based on need.
